“Makin’ a Baby” is a work of magical realism based on a self portrait at the age of 34. It played in TSA’s Soft Bites Animation Festival in Downtown LA (2018). Inspiration for this work included Monty Python films watched during preteen sleepovers, the idea of reincarnation as a unifier, American Civil War era political cartoons, and my desire to interrogate George Carlin’s “genetic accident” stand up routine shaming identity pride, given his limited perspective as someone whose demographic is commonly represented in popular media.
