Painting the Roses White, rose bush, acrylic, dirt, garbage, miniature plastic toilet, toilet paper, aluminum, ink, paper, and online digital media, 2020-22

A multi-sensory installation of site-specific, interactive animation.

While my artistic practice primarily focuses on the utopian, experimenting with (oftentimes silly) solutions to ethical conundrums enmeshed in the tradition of artmaking, I believe there are moments in history where it is morally imperative for the artist to dip into the negative and confront evil. Imagination can provide the respite and comic relief needed for mental preservation. Sometimes when reality resembles a nightmare, the most cathartic justice exists only in our fantasies.

This work began in 2020 and was shelved until mid 2022. It was inspired by my memories of entertainment that melded fantasy and realism–notably Roger Rabbit and Ally McBeal, as well as artists in history who have neutered dictators to regain power, such as Ricardo Lanzarini.
