I had been swapping homemade bites with neighbors in Huntington Beach and was not proficient in anything but English. In 2014, with research help from artists Christina Rincon and Long Le, I was able to finally talk to my neighbors and create a map of smells to orient my memories of those years as I prepared to move to Los Angeles. Recipes handwritten by neighbors are layered as households in a complex on tiled screenshots from Google Maps. This was the beginning of the plastic bag ban in Surf City, so I sun printed reusable bags with the resulting image to give back to those who participated.
I made one large scale print of this recipe map that includes an additional collage element: an original collaborative portrait drawing that I made of and with a neighborhood skater kid. This sold to benefit the Women’s Center for Creative Work (WCCW) in LA.
